One of the greatest albums to be overlooked by the metalmedia, this work of melodic heavy/black metal is a depressing and moribund descent which resembles a hybrid of older Varathron and the faster, harmonizing melodies of Rotting Christ in "Thy Mighty Contract"-era. Unfortunately, the heavy metal influence produces some tedium here where it was suitably disguised under aesthetic on the first album, but there is some amazingly articulate riff- and song-writing despite some parts that make post-Dissection listeners wince. Vocals are a seared-throat slow articulation that sounds like paper tearing inside a subwoofer welded to the cadences of songs in which technique and concept meet in expressive work. Guitars are not technical except in some aspects of soloing, but are musically ambitious in the tempo changes and lead rhythm playing of this work. While at first listen this appears to possess more Gothenburg-influenced Christian-youth-center black metal, it reveals over time the gleam of integral artistry unifying two normally incongruous styles.
