On the edge of a dream Summoning invoke wandering fantasy metal as a layered texture of darkness that is perhaps their most accessible black metal yet. What made the previous albums great is still strong in the mechanics of writing more than concept. Using quick fingered guitar lead playing in layers over subtly shifting chords and the undulating alteration of keyboard ambience this band work distinctive beat work into melodic hypnosis while sheaves of background harmony align. Like most ambient or atmospheric metals "Stronghold" has abstract and conclusive structure while riffing and harmony are more inspired by the "heavy metal" side of black metal. A potent virus this musical nihilism clears space for fantasy as its visions create a journey which imagery prepares for dreams.
