With disciplined selectivity in the riff department, the energetic metal of Sepultura adopts the rhythmic techniques of speed metal and the dark tonal nihilism of death metal, putting forth an album of scintillating vertigo in perspective shifts via arrangement. Choppy, knife-edged phrasing moves with agility through simple but enduringly anthemic songs which deliver a gracious satisfaction to the need for a savage conflict between motion and collision. The singing of Max Cavalera reach its peak on this album also, with a strained tonal possession to his voice underneath the gruff and accented vocalizations. While there is less of a drive toward raw and Satanic metal, and more toward mainstream speed metal, the tradeoff is an increase in professionalism and musicality with a return of self-confident passion of the first Sepultura releases.
