The last offering from this band to straddle mainstream acceptance without sacrificing artistic intent, "Arise" infuses an earthy rhythm to fast and intense riffing which hides a melodic core in its relentless motion. In triumph of the concept of simpler and more distinct riffs being more powerful than a slurry of indistinguishable motions, the riffs are a few chords with intensive recursion shaped into a series of thunderous explosions between blinks of a terrified witness, giving a human voice and motion to the forward thrust of change and destruction. In many ways this album is similar to what Bathory attempted on "Blood, Fire, Death" for the alienated and violently antisocial of the world; it is more artistically interesting in lyrics and music than the more obvious political affiliations to come later. Its aggression and refinement make it a highpoint of the Sepultura catalog, however, although without some of the raw punk/metal spirited existential celebration as on "Beneath the Remains" or "Morbid Visions."
