Sliding out of American styled death metal into something that is undeniably a Swedish hybrid, Seance merge the abrupt impacts and hesitation pacing of violent speed metal-influenced death metal with the classic Swedish ability to make a melody from a few notes and thus get a song moving between the opposites of mellifluous noise and staggeringly compact rhythm. The abrasive sound of distorted bass and gutted guitar tone in harmony powers the two-finger whipping fast riffs which simplify the labyrinthine navigation of the previous album into something both listenable and ecstatic in the simple elegance required to make its presence felt. Pouncing on rhythms and then releasing them, and establishing expectations delivered after overextended pauses, Seance innovated much of the technique later used by Meshuggah to great effect, but here tastefully balance the purely grinding onslaught with melodies straddling the divide between dissonance and attractiveness, creating a spacey instrumental which celebrates the significance of small but precisely places changes and thus concludes the album. More cohesive as a whole than their earlier work, the second album from Seance remains a testament of pugilistic death metal to the current day.
