Returning to their previous album, which was more commercialized and styled in rock-n-roll clothing to be itself, Godflesh redeem a failing chock full of good ideas by completely destroying and reconstituting it, turning a mediocre rock/industrial album into a dub masterpiece. In this struggle the conflict within Godflesh on a practical level becomes visible, with one side wishing to abandon guitars and make pure ambient music of discovered sounds, and the other wants to stay in the heavy beats, loud vocals and roaring guitar melange of rock. The nihilistic music called dub plays with the lowest common denominator by encoding meaningful shapes into the rhythmic consistency inertia that is beat-based music. Each song introduces itself through a dominant rhythm and layers both percussive and sound effects into a stream that resembles a cyclic narrative of symbolic sounds. Influences from drum-n-bass to grindcore to hip-hop and r&b permeate these interesting textural tracks; it doesn't get any deeper for that but as an album this is enduringly listenable and shows the best made of the worst of Godflesh.
