Both the most focused black metal work from Count Grishnack and an album that is half ambient black metal, this work shuttles between the definitive and the obscure with both rigid narrative songs and looping atmospheric mood cycles which dreamily gesture a fantasy of epic motion. Experimental in song structure and use of texture, this album shows the Count at his instrumental finest, as well as his vocals of varied emotion and inflection which are fearless and reveal the range of feeling behind black metal. For someone who has never heard the genre, this album is an excellent introduction.
