With all of the youthful innocence and ambition for which metal is known At the Gates on their first release went as far from death metal of the time as possible, using lead melodic riffing and intricate harmonic structures to anchor pieces which freely acquire tone and inject it with a self-consistent view of motion all their own. Shrieked vocals and progressive instrumentalism with focus on texture complement the labyrinthine constructions of mood and melody wrought here. Impressive for its intent and immersively brilliant upon listening, this EP influenced most death and black metal to follow with its technique and melodic sense.
