At the Gates

Before the revolution in melodic death metal, most bands focused on the heaviest sequences of thudding first-five-frets chromatic riffing they could discern and afterwards tossed in harmony or lead development, at least in the majority. After At the Gates, this changed when the progressive and neoclassical nature of this band emerged. Combining intricate death metal structuralism with a sense of dissonant layered melodic creation that prophesized the advancements of black metal, At the Gates created four excellent albums and then made radio rock for their swansong.
