BitTorrent is a type of file sharing system in which one user uploads a file, and then all other users who want that file download it piecemeal from one another.
It avoids many of the problems of conventional file sharing systems.

Some prefer other clients, such as Azureus, which is Java-based but probably the best of the alternates.
