The Farce of "Green" Politics
24 10 07 - 12:35Tory leader David Cameron is quoted as saying “what is good is that we are now developing more of a Green Dialogue,” in other words, issues relating to the environment are being considered more than something for the fanatical ravings of longhaired drunkards who post articles on the internet. Good, no? Technically yes, but in reality no. Why? The issues discussed don’t address the Green Question entirely, only the most obvious aspects (global warming for example), are touched upon.
Overpopulation and over consumption are entirely overlooked (excuse the pun). Any green issues made by a mainstream political party or government are always moulded to fit the same society which is responsible for the problem it claims it is trying to solve. There is one tip given to anybody in the Western world and it is simply: buy stuff! It is slowly becoming: buy biodegradable stuff! Whilst purchasing items that come in biodegradable packaging is a good idea, just doing so won’t fix the problem. Neither will fixing leaking taps or turning your lights off. There is no attempt to address the mentality that causes these problems, you can have any kind of government to make any kinds of rules, yet without a mental and even spiritual change within population as a whole, there will be no change.
It has been presumed, by those in charge, that we don’t need to drastically change, that we can survive as we are, in the parasitic fashion we do now, but as parasites with energy saving light bulbs. This is where the problem lies, ‘we’ fail to see that the current system isn’t flawless and believe it can be corrected by small, meaningless measures that do not require any deeper, meaningful change.
It all boils down to the old government trick of appearing to do something, whilst actually doing nothing.
Similarly, the subject of race/culture is being treated the same, after mainstream politicians have started to concede that maybe a problem lies there. Even Labour politicians have admitted that mass immigration is causing the fracture of society.
Yet, just as with the environmental issues, it has boiled down to token ideas. Instead of sensible and humane repatriation and a formulation of a proper cultural consensus we have… Britishness Tests. Correct, just memorise a few dates, claim your favourite food is fish and chips, swear allegiance to the Queen (potentially to the President of Britain… it may happen) and you’re in there.
Yet on a serious note, this is short-sighted. When people were brought over from the West Indies they were mostly familiar with their new country’s laws, customs and cultures and they seemingly adapted to life here well. However, the generation they spawned did not adapt so well and nor did the generation they, in turn, spawned. Here we are in 2007 where nobody has any kind of culture to adapt to. The immigrants lost the main part of their culture and values in order to be citizens (whilst retaining token elements of it : takeaway food places, religious buildings etc.) and the native citizens gave their’s up because if they didn’t, they were warned, they’d be Nazis and just as Evil as those Atheist Krauts.
In conclusion, whilst most people are well meaning and want to do what they can to help, meaningful change is impossible in a democracy. Pleasing everyone means letting people retain any comforts they desire, regardless of how bad they are for the whole. In a democracy the right thing can never be done and important issues will be ‘solved’ with token gestures
