Technologie ist zu komplex

« Israelischer Minister… | Home | Eine kleine Abhandlun… »

Dvorak kritisiert, dass moderne Technologie viel zu kompliziert ist und als modischer Selbstzweck gesehen wird.

When the Apple Macintosh first debuted, it was thought of as the first computer that did not have or ever need a manual. In fact, it did need a manual, and an ever-growing one at that. The computer that doesn't need a manual of some sort has not yet been invented. In the case of the Macintosh, the arrogance of the "no manual concept" actually spawned a complete line of third-party books called the "Missing Manual for..."

All technology is too complex. Consider the automobile. It began as a
complex device, with a hand-cranked engine, manual sparks, hard rubber
tires, and the like. You'd think by now that cars would be simplified—
something without complexity that everyone could learn how to use. Think
again. No two cars use the same oil. There are myriad tire sizes and
choices. You can't even work on the engine any more because it's so
complex. And the manuals, well, let's just say they're huge. Wouldn't the
world have been a better place if all cars were identical?

Computers were kind of heading in that direction, with the beige x86
Wintel boxes, but that wasn't meant to be. I suppose the "drabness of
same" was probably too much to bear, although I would argue that computers
should be under the desk and not displayed like a piece of art.

Computers, like cars, are becoming personal statements rather than
practical devices. Yet we are still witnessing an increasing amount of
complexity. Seems strange that we can personalize/pimp/custom-order our
technology, but as much as we "pretty" it up, it's often still too
complicated to use. And then there's software. There's hardly anything
"personal" about it, but there it is, getting worse by the day.

Die Grenzen der Nützlichkeit wurden in Technologie und Gesellschaft längst überschritten. Intuitiver, instintiver und zweckgebundener Nutzen ist einer masturbatorischen Verkomplizierung gewichen.
